Critical periods of Cancer Patients Should Have at Home

Boston, Not a few people with severe cancer who choose home as a place to breathe his last breath. Sure enough, it will die of cancer patients in a calm and family will feel better emotionally when at home.

According to the Journal of Clinical Oncology, doing home care for patients with severe cancer can not only save money, but also can reduce the pain physically and emotionally.

"Cancer patients who died in the ICU or hospital will feel the physical and emotional pain even worse. In addition, the quality of life even worse," said Dr. Alexi Wright of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, as reported by Reuters, Tuesday (14/09/2010).

Dr Wright explained, if the patient is aware that a more aggressive treatment (such as in hospitals) not only can affect the quality of life, but also their loved ones after death, then the patient will be able to make different choices, which is being treated at home.

To observe this condition, Wright's team studied 342 patients with terminal cancer (stage end) and his family until the patient dies, usually about 4.5 months later.

"From the survey results, most cancer patients prefer to die at home, 36 percent died in hospitals and 8 percent died in the intensive care unit (ICU)," said Dr Wright.

According to Dr. Wright, when cancer patients died in the ICU, family and people he loved five times more likely to be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

"This is the first study showing that families of patients who died in the ICU are at high risk for developing PTSD," said Dr Wright.

Families and loved ones of patients who died in the hospital are also more likely to have prolonged grief disorder and discontinuation of sadness that lasts more than six months.

The study shows, home care can not only alleviate the suffering of terminal cancer patients, but also can help patients live slightly longer.

Do the Near-close Patients who had chemotherapy

Jakarta, has a family or close friends who have cancer must have brought concerns. But you should not get too close or hug a cancer patient who just do chemotherapy, at least for a week. Why should we?

Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment technique to slow or destroy the growth of cancer cells. Chemotherapy is an effective treatment in overcoming cancer and relieve symptoms of cancer.

"Let's not get too close to cancer patients after chemotherapy, especially for infants and children under the age of 6 years. If you want to visit just shake it, do not have to embrace," said dr Fielda Djuita, Sp.Rad (K). Onk.Rad, Medical Staff Functional Installation Dharmais Radiotherapy Cancer Hospital, in layman's counseling program "Current Radiation Method In Cancer Patients' Hospital Dharmais, Tuesday (21/09/2010).

dr Fielda explained, patients who had just chemotherapy will issue a gas containing chemicals from chemotherapy through the windpipe, either through the mouth or nose. This gas can interfere with peripheral blood penjenguknya who are toddlers and have a low immunity.

The effect, according to dr Fielda, people affected by the delivery of white blood cells and platelets in the body will be damaged in a long time (about 10 years later) and can lead to leukemia (blood cancer).

"At least for a week after chemotherapy do not go near it with cancer patients, especially infants and young children. Adults with weakened immunity could also be affected," explained the doctor who was born 58 years ago this.

According to Dr. Fielda, infants and children under 6 years of age have cells that are young and have not developed completely. While the weak-bodied people who have a weak body cells as well.

Therefore, if those people close to the cancer patient who had just chemotherapy, the gas containing the chemical from the chemotherapy can affect cells in the body and the most vulnerable are the peripheral blood. Damage to peripheral blood is what will trigger the blood cancer.

Jakarta, genetic or hereditary factors is one risk factor for cancer. But if you have a family history of cancer does not mean you'll get cancer, too, because 90 percent of cancers are caused by environmental rather than genetic.

It should be noted that genetic factors are not the direct cause of disease. Genetic factors on cancer disease transmitted from generation to generation. Thus, the reduced genetic risk factor, not directly to the cancer disease.

"Genetic factors in cancer affects only 5-10 percent only. That is, 90 percent more cancers caused by environmental factors and living habits," said Dr. Ronald A. Hukom, MHSc, SpPD-KHOM, Disease Specialist Doctors
In, Consultant Cancer and Blood Disorders of Dharmais Cancer Hospital in Jakarta, in Layman's Colorectal Cancer Seminar at Hotel Borobudur, Jakarta on Friday (01/10/2010).

According to Dr. Ronald, genetic factors usually occur in certain cancers, like breast cancer, ovarian cancer (ovarian), prostate cancer and colorectal cancer (colon).

"If the dominant genetic factors cause cancer, then the patient will begin to suffer from cancer since a younger age," explained Dr. Ronald further.

Genetics expert, Dr. Teguh Haryo Saso, PhD, Expert in Human Molecular Genetics Genome Center, School of Medical Sciences, University Sains Malaysia in the Health Consultation in detikHealth tell if someone has a genetic risk factor for certain cancers, so it has a higher susceptibility than others to suffer from cancer.

"Genetic risk factors can not be changed (at least for now). However, genetic risk factors only one of various other risk factors, such as environment and lifestyle," said Dr. Teguh.

Other risk factors is that of course can be controlled. Prevention of cancer is typically the control of environmental factors and lifestyle, that is by implementing a healthy lifestyle such as diet and physical activity.
